Thinking about relocating to a continuing-care retirement community? Residents’ advice: Make the transition early enough to fully enjoy the CCRC experience.
To Be Continued …

Steve Ruzansky has always been a doer. An educator and school counselor who treasured his time at Friends’ Central School in Wynnewood, Ruzansky also got involved in his community. For example, he previously held the post of Judge of Elections. So, in May 2021, when he moved into the Dunwoody Village retirement community in Newtown Square, he hit the ground running. In fact, earlier this year he finished his term as president of the Dunwoody Village Residents’ Association and co-chair of the annual Holiday Bazaar. Now, with his tenure served, he can focus on devoting more time to one of his greatest loves: live music. He intends to fill his newfound “me time” with, among other things, jam sessions with fellow musicians. “I’ve been involved in music for a long time—bluegrass especially, from guitar to banjo to fiddle,” he says. “One of my goals when I came here was to bring more music to Dunwoody. … I do a number of jams in the area, and it’s always fun to see who shows up. Sometimes, when you see a certain individual come in the door, you say to yourself, ‘Ooh, this will be a good jam.’” Moving into a retirement community while still active opens the door to new adventures, new friendships, and more opportunities for exercise one’s freedom. Mornings might start with yoga on the terrace, afternoons with art classes or wine tastings, and evenings with concerts or book clubs—or, in Ruzansky’s preference, live music. Every day offers a chance to eat well, to laugh with friends, and to indulge new passions … or return to ones that got left behind amid the busyness of daily life. For those who like to socialize, neighbors in such communities tend to become fast friends, sharing meals, going on outings, and enjoying the countless small joys that come from spending time together. From scenic drives to walks on the grounds to trips to nearby cultural destinations, residents have a surplus of new things to explore—quite likely with plenty of good company to share in the exploration. Continuing-care retirement communities also offer peace of mind to residents, as well as their family members. With qualified health care on the same campus and caring, capable staff on hand, residents can relax and focus on living fully. Ruzansky has some advice to share: Make the transition to a CCRC early enough to fully enjoy all the benefits these communities offer. Exploring the Next Chapter The Philadelphia region offers a rich variety of senior living communities designed to support older adults. Whether someone is enjoying independent living, needs a bit of help with daily tasks, or requires memory care or other specialized healthcare services, these communities provide comfort, security, and a true sense of home. Many have earned a strong reputation over the years, recognized as some of the most trusted retirement destinations both in Pennsylvania and across the country. The communities highlighted here showcase some of the area’s highest-rated options. Choosing a place to call home is a deeply personal decision. This list represents just a small sampling of the many outstanding options available. Consider it a starting point for exploring the communities that might be the perfect fit for the next chapter.
